I hate tailgaters in Dickinson, North Dakota. Dickinson is the worst place that I have ever lived regarding tailgating. The second worst tailgating place that I have ever lived, is the small town in Idaho where I bought a home.

You might think that the worst tailgaters, would be the pushy, aggressive people in Tampa, Orlando, Dallas, Denver, Phoenix, or Salt Lake. But the people in the big cities who drive in heavy traffic every day, know that if you follow too closely behind another vehicle, you are going to be in an at-fault vehicle accident for rear-ending another vehicle.

In Dickinson, and in the small town in Idaho where I used to live, it appeared that the local people were too stupid to have ever had the thought, “If this vehicle in front of me slams on the brakes, there is no way that I could stop in time before running into the back of this vehicle. I would be the one who was blamed for the accident, for following too close, driving too fast, or not paying attention.”

It’s like the people in Dickinson have this thought process, “The stoplight up ahead has just changed to red, even though there is no way to continue through the stop light at this moment, I will follow as closely as possible behind the vehicle in front of me, so that at least I might get into an at-fault accident, have some points assessed against my driver’s license, have my vehicle insurance go up or be cancelled, and have some damage done to my vehicle so that I won’t be able to drive it for a while.”

The tailgaters in Dickinson fall into the following categories, from the most common, to the least common:

Ford F250/F350, Dodge 2500/3500, Chevy 2500/3500 owners that follow too closely because that is what they think their vehicle is for, tailgating. In Dickinson, probably 50% of the people who own these 3/4 ton-1 ton pickup trucks, do not own a trailer of any kind, or do any heavy hauling, so the next best thing in their mind, is to drive like an asshole. Even if you are driving at the speed limit, or a little over the speed limit, in a 25 mph, 35 mph, or 45 mph zone, they follow as closely as possible, because they are in big hurry to get from one red stop light to the next red stop light.
Stupid, inexperienced, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder young people with $2,500 vehicles. Mostly from poor families, but a small few are from middle class or upper middle class families, mixed up, troubled, confused, drug addict young people who can never think more than one step ahead, they just don’t know how to not get into a car accident yet.
Highway drivers outside of Dickinson, that can’t use logic, reasoning, understand physics, or do math. Scenario: “If you are driving one mile behind a vehicle, and over the course of five minutes, you steadily become closer, and closer, and closer to the vehicle ahead of you, are you going faster than the vehicle ahead of you, and is the vehicle ahead of you going slower than you are? Do you think that you will need to pass the slower moving vehicle ahead of you, or if you follow the slower moving vehicle ahead of you as closely as possible, will you be going the same speed as you have been going?”
Highway drivers that feel safer driving as closely as possible behind you. There are women drivers that are young, middle-aged, or older who somehow feel like they are safer, if they can drive as closely as possible behind your vehicle, that you know where you are going, that you know the speed limit, that everything will be O.K. if they stay right behind you. It’s like they are scared to be alone in the woods, alone in the dark, or alone on the highway. There are some confused men, maybe they don’t even have a driver’s license, that try to stay right behind another vehicle, because they feel like they will get into less trouble and not be noticed by law enforcement.

The least likely people to tailgate, are truly successful people who have accumulated many assets. They do not want any vehicle accident, personal injury, or property damage of any kind, because this would only be a waste of their time, a nuisance, an inconvenience, and possibly cause them other problems. They do not want to have any altercation with people, if they can possibly avoid it.

Wealthy people, successful people, have experienced the frustration of being stuck in slow moving traffic, so they have gone and gotten their pilot’s license, and have bought an airplane either by themselves, or jointly with several other people. If they want to or expect to travel long distances, they use their airplane. They have planned ahead, not to be frustrated with traffic.

Wealthy people, successful people, plan on taking several or more vacations and trips each year. They look forward to going to their vacation home in a different state, or a different country. They look forward to laying on a warm, sunny beach, going sailing, going deep sea fishing, or going scuba diving. How or why, would they want to be involved in an at-fault vehicle accident, wasting their time and money, and causing other problems, by driving so close behind other people that they can’t stop in time to avoid a rear-end collision? They plan, not to get into vehicle accidents.

Wealthy successful people, spend their time looking at investments, buying real estate, starting a business, buying businesses, and instructing and mentoring their children. They plan what they do with their time. Why would they plan on being in a vehicle accident by driving so close behind other people that they can not stop in time to avoid a rear-end collision? They plan, not to get into vehicle accidents.

It is only the poor people, the stupid people, the drug addicts, the feeble minded, the white trash, and the dumb-as-a-box-of-rocks blue collar people that can not get it through their stupid fucking thick skulls, that driving so close behind other people that they can not stop in time to avoid a collision, is something that is going to waste their time, waste other people’s time, cause an altercation, cost them money, cause points on their driver’s license, require repair on their vehicle, raise their vehicle insurance or cause insurance to be cancelled, and possibly cause them problems with their current and future employment.

Unethical Human Medical Experimentation In Dickinson, North Dakota

I have lived in Dickinson, North Dakota for about six years. The reason why I came to Dickinson, was because there was an oil boom in this area from 2007 through 2014. Though the oil boom is over, and approximately 80% of the out-of-state workers have returned to the states where they came from, I have remained here in Dickinson because I can still make more money here than I can where my home is in Idaho.

I have not ever come out and said it openly before, but I might as well say it now, the reason why the wages are still fairly high in Dickinson, is because it sucks so bad here, that no one wants to work here, stay here, or live here. Further, truly intelligent, sharp, talented, highly skilled people don’t have to live here and suffer through this, they can probably get a job someplace else, anyplace else, so it is only the less intelligent, less talented, less skilled people, or people who have got something wrong with them, that stay here.

I have described that living in Dickinson, is like being in prison: There are hardly any women; the women who are here are mean, unfriendly, hostile, overweight, and unattractive; the local people here are suspicious, mistrustful, uncooperative, and undermining to people who are from someplace else; there is no where to go and nothing to do; the City of Dickinson Police follow everyone around, watch them, and treat them just like they are all convicts or inmates.

It is very difficult living in Dickinson, North Dakota. It is not normal, it is very harsh. You can not do, or get things that you would elsewhere. It is very isolated from civilization by the many miles of cold, frozen, barren prairie. And one of the things that you cannot get, is competent medical care.

Beginning in 2014 while living in Dickinson, I began getting very sick, from what appeared to be something in the air in Dickinson. I had previously lived and worked all over the United States, and I had never had allergies or an allergic reaction to anything before. In Dickinson, my eyes would swell up, almost completely shut, my eyes would water continuously, and my nose would run continuously. There is hardly any plant life in Dickinson, what could this be from?

I went to Sanford Health in Dickinson about my allergic reaction in 2014, and was diagnosed with “allergic conjunctivitis”, and I was given a prescription for some kind of eye drop medication. When I went to get this prescription filled at the grocery store pharmacy in Dickinson, there was a line of people all the way from the pharmacy counter, out the door of the grocery store. I was too sick to wait in line for this prescription to be filled.

When I have been very sick in Dickinson, with a sudden severe allergic reaction, I have gone to family practice clinics in Dickinson, and I have been told I would have to wait seven weeks for an appointment. I then went again to Sanford Health Clinic, and I was given a very expensive medication prescription, for a very small amount of medication, which did not help at all.

I then resorted to trying every over-the-counter allergy medication that there is, first in the normal recommended doses, and then in much larger doses after these over-the-counter medications failed to work. Eventually, I found that taking “Zyrtec” a.k.a. “Cetirizine” in much larger doses, helps the most. But these allergy attacks are becoming more and more frequent, and the large doses of Zyrtec are becoming less and less effective.

What is it in the air in Dickinson, that can suddenly make me have such a severe allergic reaction, even when it is in October and snowing? There are only a very small variety of trees in Dickinson, and there are very few trees overall. What the fuck is going on? What is in the air?

The experiments include: the exposure of people to many chemical and biological weapons (including infection of people with deadly or debilitating diseases), human radiation experiments, injection of people with toxic and radioactive chemicals, surgical experiments like KX-338, interrogation and torture experiments, tests involving mind-altering substances, and a wide variety of others. Many of these tests were performed on children, the sick, and mentally disabled individuals, often under the guise of “medical treatment”. In many of the studies, a large portion of the subjects were poor, racial minorities, or prisoners.

Funding for many of the experiments was provided by the United States government, especially the Unites States military, the Central Intelligence Agency, or private corporations involved with military activities. The human research programs were usually highly secretive, and in many cases information about them was not released until many years after the studies had been performed.

My belief is, that because Dickinson is geographically and socially isolated, with the lowest education level and least well-read people anywhere in the United States, that unethical medical testing is being conducted on the people in and around Dickinson, without their knowledge or consent.

The very large and new Sanford Health Clinic and St. Alexius Hospital in Dickinson give the local people and people in the surrounding area, the impression that they can expect modern, up-to-date, and competent medical care in Dickinson. But this is not the case, people in Dickinson find that they do not have their health problems effectively treated or solved in Dickinson. Is this because the “test subjects” in Dickinson, are not supposed to be treated, and only monitored in order to observe and study the long term effects of the chemicals and substances that they have been exposed to?

Why Local People In Dickinson, North Dakota Prefer To Stay Home

In my previous blog post titled “Socializing In Dickinson, North Dakota”, I explained that there were a lot more people going to Patterson Lake Beach, bars, restaurants, parties, events, and concerts in Dickinson back during the Oil Boom in 2007 through 2014, and for a short time after the Oil Boom ended.

I explained that once approximately 5,000 out of state workers returned to the states where they came from, Patterson Lake Beach and bars in Dickinson, went from having 200 people at one time, to having only 5 people at one time. After the Oil Boom was over, and so many out of state workers left, Dickinson quieted down, calmed down, and it appears that the local people in Dickinson prefer to stay home.

In this blog post, I want to explain why it is that the local people in Dickinson prefer to stay home. The main reasons have to do with several different kinds of fear, mistrust, suspicion, and money. These fears, mistrust, and suspicion are present in many local people whether they are poor, lower middle class, middle class, or wealthy.

Up until this most recent oil boom in 2007, Dickinson was very controlled. It was controlled by wealthy or influential people, who decided who got hired, who got fired, who got promoted, who got a car loan, who got a home loan, and so forth. Wealthy people, influential people, and employers had a lot of power, because there were not many places to work. If a person “got out of line”, they risked never being able to get a promotion, losing their job, or being “blacklisted” from being hired elsewhere.

Many people in Dickinson, whether they were poor, lower middle class, or middle class, feared going out in Dickinson, because they ran the risk of letting their guard down, enjoying themselves, and being “reported” by someone, or being “observed” by someone higher up than them, and later facing unwanted and unintended consequences.

A corollary of this was, poor people, lower middle class, and middle class people, feared going out in Dickinson either alone, or with their family, and unknowingly entering a place where a supervisor, company owner, or wealthy person was drunk, and being verbally abused or insulted in an embarrassing way, and being unable to defend themselves because of the fear of themselves or their family member losing their job, being evicted, or their home being foreclosed on.

Something that I have written about before, is that there was so little opportunity to get ahead in Dickinson, that one way that people in Dickinson could feel like they were getting ahead, was when other people failed. So, unfortunately, it became common in Dickinson for people to cause or assist other people to fail. One way to assist other people to fail was to withhold help from others, which is easier to do if you do not talk to, or socialize with other people.

Because it was so common for people in Dickinson to cause or assist other people to fail, undermining was a very common practice. In order to not be undermined, people in Dickinson became very tight-lipped about their affairs and everything that they did, and one way to do this was to not talk to or socialize with other people, lest they find out something about them, and use it against them.

There are not very many middle class people or wealthy people in Dickinson. In the past, these middle class or wealthy people might have been able to socialize at the Elks Lodge, but the Elks Lodge in Dickinson now is almost extinct. At the Elks Lodge, middle class or wealthy people could have discussed what college their children were going to, their vacation to foreign country, or their vacation home in a different state, but not anymore.

In Dickinson, because there are so few middle class or wealthy people, it is very hard for these people to go out in public, to places like a bar, restaurant, party, event, or concert, lest they let their guard down, and accidentally start talking about their home in Arizona in front of other people, or be overheard by other people.

In summary, the fear of suffering consequences at work; the fear of coming into conflict with a supervisor, employer or wealthy person; the fear of socializing with people who may then later undermine them; the desire to not make friends with others who may later want help; the desire to not share personal information with others; these fears, mistrust, suspicion, and disparity in wealth, make local people in Dickinson not want to socialize or go out in public, and prefer to stay home.

Again, this is something that I do not think Odyssey Theaters or the City of Dickinson understand when they are trying to build a cinema complex and a town square downtown. The local people in Dickinson, do not want to socialize, they would rather stay home. Local people in Dickinson are mistrustful, suspicious, wary, and uncomfortable with local people, and especially strangers from out of town. A cinema complex or a town square are not places they would want to go or enjoy, these are places that local people would try to avoid.

Socializing In Dickinson, North Dakota

I lived in Dickinson, North Dakota during the years 2011 through 2018. There was an Oil Boom going on in Dickinson from 2007 through 2014, that ended once the price of oil dropped below $80 per barrel near the end of 2014, and continued to fall.

In 2011 in Dickinson, restaurants, bars, hotels, apartments, and RV Parks were crowded with people from all over the United States who had great optimism and enthusiasm about having the chance to make a lot of money in the oil field. These were not bad people, many of these people were educated, intelligent, hardworking, talented people who were looking for the opportunity to make their fortune.

All over the United States, on television news, or television shows, reporters and journalist were telling about how everyone was making over $100,000 per year in North Dakota. Although this was not true, the people from all over the United States that arrived in Dickinson with great optimism and enthusiasm, wouldn’t know that this wasn’t true until they had worked through the Spring, Summer, Fall, and into the Winter.

Although for me personally, I had been convinced by my own thoughts and the local people in Dickinson, that the years 2007 through 2014 were the “Ugly Years”, or the “Oil Field Trash Years”, these were actually the best of times, the affluent years, and the most social years for Dickinson.

The point of me writing this particular blog post, is that the local people and myself, believed that after the Oil Boom ended, Dickinson would return to some kind of normalcy, and calm down to something that was preferable. It has dawned on me now, that the Oil Boom years 2007 through 2014 were the best years as far as socializing and having fun in Dickinson.

In 2011 in Dickinson, in the Summer at Patterson Lake Beach, there would be about 200 people at this beach every weekend, sunning, swimming, throwing frisbees, throwing footballs, drinking, and cooking out. About 150 of these people would be men, and 50 of them would be women. At the time, I might have thought that there were only 50 women or less, because there were just too many men, but the opposite was true, women came to Patterson Lake Beach because there were so many men.

There were maybe 20 attractive looking women at Patterson Lake Beach on the weekend in the Summer of 2011, because there were so many men. About half of these attractive women on Patterson Lake Beach were Dickinson State University students, a few were local high school girls, the rest were women who came to work in Dickinson.

In 2011, I never could have imagined that in the Summer of 2013, there would only be twenty people on the beach at Patterson Lake on the weekend. And by 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018 in the Summer on the weekend there would only be about five people on the beach at Patterson Lake.

In the Summer of 2013, when I was shocked to see only twenty people at Patterson Lake Beach, I thought that what must have happened was that the out of state workers got tired of the local people, the local people got tired of the out of state workers, and the Dickinson State University girls got tired of everyone ogling them, so no one came to the beach anymore.

Also in 2013, I noted that bars that had had 200 people inside at night during 2011, now only had about 50 people. In 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018 the number of people in these bars might be five people.

In 2013, 2014, and 2015, there were often very large wedding receptions held in the ballroom of the Astoria Hotel, the Elks Lodge, and the Eagles Lodge. These large wedding reception parties have become much, much fewer after 2016.

The large event parties that were held in 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2016 such as the API Fish Fry and the Hair Ball Concert in the West River Ice Rink Center, parties and concerts in the Biesiot Activities Center, and the downtown Alive at 5 Concerts have become much smaller, and much less frequent.

Altogether, since the beginning of the end of the Oil Boom in Dickinson, there have been much, much fewer people going to Patterson Lake Beach, bars at night, having parties, putting on events, putting on concerts, or going to events or concerts. What happened?, the population of Dickinson might have peaked at 28,000 and is now at maybe 23,000, with only 5,000 people moving away, why would Patterson Lake Beach or bars go from having 200 people at a time, to only having 5 people at a time?

I must have written this phrase twenty times in my previous blog posts, “Once the Oil Boom ended in 2014, the out of state workers returned to the states where they came from.” 5,000 workers returned to the states where they came from. I now realize, that the out of state workers made Dickinson a much more sociable place than it had been.

Earlier in this blog post, I wrote that I had been convinced that Dickinson would return to a kind of “normalcy” after the Oil Boom was over. Once Dickinson became quieter and calmer, I thought that local people would emerge from their holes and burrows, but they haven’t really.

I was somewhat mistaken about what was happening during the Oil Boom, and what would happen after the Oil Boom ended, because I was not realizing or recognizing that there was a big difference between the out of state workers and the people who are from Dickinson.

The out of state workers, were risk takers or adventurers, whether they wanted to be or not. They left behind their families, friends, what they knew, and what they were familiar with, to travel a long distance to go somewhere where they didn’t know anyone, or know about anything. They had to be outgoing, in order to get a job, find a place to live, find a place to eat, find a bank, get along with people, and keep their job.

The local people in Dickinson, are the opposite of risk takers or adventurers, they chose to stay in the same place all of their life, not ever deal with anything or anyone unfamiliar to them, and not try new things. (Now that I think about it, if I would have written this paragraph before, this explains why the local people in Dickinson do not like out of state workers: they don’t like dealing with anything or anyone that is unfamiliar to them, and they don’t like trying new things, new ideas, or change.)

So, as far as 2007 through 2014 actually having been the best of times, the most affluent years, and the most social years for Dickinson, it was because of the Oil Boom economy, and the influx of out of state workers. The out of state workers had to be outgoing by necessity in order to begin working and living in some place that was completely new and different to them, while at the same time intentionally and unintentionally forcing new ideas, beliefs, ways of doing things, and changes onto the local people, who were reluctant and resistant to try anything new, or change anything.

Now that the Oil Boom is over, and the out of state workers have returned to the states where they came from, the local people in Dickinson can do what they want to do with much less interference or disruption. And it appears, that what local people in Dickinson want to do, is mostly just stay home.

A second reason for me writing this particular blog post, is to explain why it may be a mistake for Odyssey Theaters or the City of Dickinson to plan on new development in downtown Dickinson, in order to make it a social gathering point. Odyssey Theaters and the City of Dickinson are just not realizing, that the local people in Dickinson, are not social people, they do not like things that they are unfamiliar with, new ideas, new ways of doing things, or changes. They would much rather stay home, than be around people that they do not know.

My Opinion Of The Stark County North Dakota Sheriff Department

I have lived in Dickinson, North Dakota for six years now, and I mostly have complaints. There is a shortage of women, there is a scarcity of attractive women, the people are unfriendly, co-workers are hostile and undermining, employers and managers hate people with an education, most company managers have criminal records, there is nepotism and discrimination in hiring, most of the bartenders and waitresses at restaurants are drug addicts from Spokane or Seattle, the real estate prices are too high considering that the oil boom is over, and the City of Dickinson Police are over aggressive in following and stopping people.

However, contrary to everything else, I have nothing bad at all to say about the Stark County Sheriff Department. I wish that the City of Dickinson Police Department, and everything else for that matter, was run like the Stark County Sheriff Department.

I lived outside of Dickinson, in the Stark County Sheriff Department’s jurisdiction for four years, and I was never followed, stopped, or paid any attention to by the Sheriff Deputies. And, there was absolutely no crime in the neighborhood where I lived.

I will admit, that once you consider anyone who lives outside of the City of Dickinson, their property is worth at least $200,000, and there are no apartments or trailer parks, so the Stark County Sheriff Department Deputies are not dealing with as many drug addict, hoodlum, riff-raff people as the City of Dickinson Police.

However, when driving around outside of the residential neighborhood where I lived for four years, into other areas of Stark County, even though I had an old truck with an out of state license plate, the Stark County Sheriff Deputies still left me alone and they paid no attention to me.

There were about four or five occasions where I had to telephone the Stark County Sheriff Department, several of them I have already written about, where the Stark County Sheriff Deputies were very professional and helpful. One, when a strange acting young man was hiding in the bushes at Patterson Lake near the newly paved walk path; Two, when a former employee of an oil field service company attempted to “borrow” a trailer at 10:30 p.m.; Three, Four, and Five when I was looking for my stolen truck, and the thief was hiding in South Heart, Belfield, etcetera.

Now that I think about it, I probably dealt with the Stark County Sheriff Deputies six or seven times. My impressions was, and is, that the Stark County Sheriff Department was hiring only men over 30, who had prior military service. The reason why I think this, is because all of the Stark County Sheriff Deputies that I dealt with, were over 30, and they were very confident and calm.

I would describe every interaction with the Stark County Sheriff Deputies as follows:

First, they wanted to get an understanding of what was going on, and they did not have any difficulty understanding what you were telling them, which was a relief, they appeared to be intelligent. Not only did they understand what you were telling them, at the same time, they understood why you had contacted them about this in the first place, they understood, without even having to ask.

Second, they would ask for additional information or details, which didn’t take long, because they knew right away what else they wanted to know. Third, they would let you know what they were going to do. Fourth, they would go and do what they said they were going to do.

The Stark County Sheriff Deputies always appeared to be very professional, experienced, intelligent, competent, and confident. They all appeared to be ex-military.

I have met and talked to former Stark County Sheriff Clarence Tuhy several times, and I have heard about different controversies surrounding Sheriff Tuhy. Probably the most well known controversy, was when a group of Sheriff Deputies filed a complaint against Sheriff Tuhy for being verbally abusive. In the end, the state of North Dakota exonerated Sheriff Tuhy in regard to this complaint.

My opinion is, that even if Sheriff Tuhy was mean to the Stark County Sheriff Deputies at the time, this is was part of the origin of a good, professional Sheriff Department. Those who might have experienced verbal abuse in the department might strongly disagree with me, but I suspect, even though this type of behavior is not permitted, it was meant to motivate people to be serious, competent, alert, and that their best effort was expected of them.

Regarding the current Stark County Sheriff, Terry Oestreich, one of the candidates in the upcoming Sheriff election stated to a reporter, that there was something like an 80% turn over in Stark County Sheriff Deputies in something like an 18 month period. I didn’t like hearing this, because I thought that from what I saw, and the Sheriff Deputies that I had met, that everything was very well run within the Stark County Sheriff Department.

If you stop and think about it, why wouldn’t the Stark County Sheriff Deputies leave Dickinson? There is a shortage of women, a scarcity of attractive women, the bartender women and waitresses are drug addicts, prostitution is not allowed, there is no where to go, nothing to do, real estate prices are way too high, and the City of Dickinson Police follow everyone and try to stop them. Why would the Sheriff Deputies want to live in Dickinson? Why wouldn’t they move away? They are intelligent, competent, and confident, they could get a job anywhere, they don’t have to stay here.

If Sheriff candidate Sergeant Corey Lee of the Dickinson Police Department does become elected as Sheriff, I hope that he continues the exact same hiring practices, practices, and procedures as Sheriff Terry Oestreich. In other words, don’t mess this up, and don’t try to fix something that isn’t broken.

Banks Don’t Want To Lend, Or Own Property In Dickinson, And It Is Causing Real Estate Prices To Fall

Banks in Dickinson, North Dakota do not want to loan money on property, and end up owning property in Dickinson, and it is causing real estate prices to fall. No matter what people in Dickinson say or think about the economy in Dickinson remaining steady or improving, the Banks think the opposite, as demonstrated by their current lending practices.

The Banks don’t want to loan money on property in Dickinson because of the following doubts about Dickinson:

The Banks believe that real estate prices in Dickinson will continue to fall.
The Banks do not want to have loans on properties that are depreciating, which people would walk away from when they owe the Bank more money than their home is worth.
The Banks believe that the economy in Dickinson will continue to decline, with fewer jobs, lay-offs, businesses closing, and wage rates continually decreasing.
The Banks do not want to loan money based on people’s income history in Dickinson, because they believe that many people will lose their job, be unable to find another job, and their wage rates will continually decrease.
The Banks believe that people in Dickinson will default on their home loans, because they will get laid-off, be unable to find another job, their wage rates will drop, or they will find out that they owe more money on their home than it is worth as its value depreciates.
The Banks believe that they will likely end up owning many properties in Dickinson because of people defaulting on their mortgages. The Banks believe that these properties will be depreciating in value greatly, they will be unable to find qualified replacement buyers, and the Bank will be responsible for paying insurance and high property taxes on these properties for many years.

In order to not have problems, the Banks are trying to not lend money on houses in Dickinson, because they don’t want to end up owning many, many houses in Dickinson.

The Banks don’t care, that the depreciation of home values that they are so worried about, they are perhaps the primary cause of this right now.

I will give two quick examples of home buyers who were willing to pay the seller’s asking price, but the Banks would not loan money to any of the buyers, so the home price dropped 10% to 20% in less than one year.

A friend of mine who has lived in Dickinson for 35 years, currently owns a home with $20,000 remaining on his mortgage. I believe his current mortgage payments are $300 per month or less. He is single, and a couple of years ago he no longer had to make child support payments of $700 per month or more on his two children, as they are now grown. He has worked at the same company for over eight years, and his take home pay after all taxes is at least $3,000 per month. He owns several vehicles, which are paid for.

He agreed to purchase a neighboring house for $134,000, which was less than the current appraised value. He thought that he would have no problem getting a mortgage for this house, based on his income, his employment history, his large equity in his current home, and having no car payments, credit card debt, or other debt. But the Banks in Dickinson denied him a home loan.

If you use an on-line mortgage payment calculator, the mortgage payment for the $134,000 house would be less than $900 per month, plus his current mortgage payment is $300 per month. For a single male with $3,000 per month income after all taxes, with no other debts, why couldn’t he afford $1,200 per month total for home payments?

The Banks did not want to make a home loan to him with payments of less than $900 per month, but for twelve years on his income he had paid nearly this much every month in child support.

Within less than one year, the seller’s asking price for this home that he agreed to buy for $134,000 had dropped to $120,000.

This second story is about my experience. I own a home in Idaho which is paid for, but I have been working in Dickinson for almost six years. For about three years, I was a roommate of a home owner in Dickinson, where I paid about $480 per month. Once the Oil Boom ended, and so many out of state workers returned to where they came from, apartment rents in Dickinson decreased greatly, and I rented an apartment for less than $400 per month. However, I wanted to get out of this apartment, because I had some bad neighbors. I saw a very inexpensive manufactured home for sale in Belfield, on its owned land, so this was something that I was interested in buying:

A trucking company in Idaho, that was doing business in North Dakota, wanted to buy housing for three of its truck drivers, so this trucking company purchased a 3-bedroom single-wide manufactured home in Belfield on its owned triple lot, for nearly $50,000 in about 2014. This trucking company completely furnished this manufactured home with everything from furniture, to appliances, beds, bed linens, cookware, and utensils.

This trucking company in Idaho, no longer does business in North Dakota, so they wanted to get rid of this manufactured home, just like it is, with all of the furnishings. Six months ago, they were asking $25,000. I went and looked at it, and it was fine with me. The property taxes were only about $100 per year. The mortgage payments, would be much less than I had been paying in rent for the past six years in Dickinson.

I went to or spoke to four or five Banks in Dickinson, and they each had their own excuse for not wanting to lend any money for this manufactured home, such as “We have been instructed to not lend money on any manufactured home whatsoever, no matter how new it is, or how much land is involved.” or “We can not lend money because the land is zoned commercial.”

I thought that this was ridiculous, I have very good credit, this was less money than a new vehicle costs, and the Bank could place a lien against my paid for home in Idaho if they ever needed to collect their money. I was seriously considering putting this home purchase on my credit card, which has a credit limit of $35,000.

Many other people looked at this manufactured home in Belfield, and tried to buy it, but none of them could get a loan from a Bank. A few days ago, the real estate agent sent me a text message, stating that the seller’s asking price is now down to $20,000. This is a 20% price drop in six months. I would have been happy to pay $25,000 with a home loan from a Bank.

I know one other person in Dickinson now, whose take home pay after taxes is at least $3,000 per month. He is single, in his forties, and he has been employed with the same company for several years. He recently applied for a home loan with a Bank in Dickinson, for a home owned by a relative of his who is willing to sell it to him for less than $200,000, even though the appraised value would be closer to $250,000.

This Bank informed him that they would approve him for a mortgage of up to $70,000. Which means they don’t trust him to be able to make monthly payments of more than $400 per month. If a single person’s take home pay after taxes is $3,000 per month, why wouldn’t this person be able to afford mortgage payments closer to $1,000 per month, and a mortgage of up to $180,000?

What I am explaining, is that Banks in Dickinson right now are being very restrictive on home loans, because for one thing, they expect home values to decrease. The funny thing is, these Banks’ lending policies are the primary cause right now for why home values are decreasing. They won’t loan money even when buyers are willing to pay the sellers’ asking prices.

In 1996 I moved to Tampa to work for a company as an engineer. I rented an apartment on Lake Magdelene in north Tampa. Up until the 1950s, most of north Tampa was hundreds and hundreds of acres of orange groves. As Tampa grew continually, it pushed northward into these orange groves.

This area of Tampa was very beautiful, or it had been. There were probably nearly one hundred small lakes, ranging in size from fifty feet across, to Lake Magdelene which was about one mile in length. Besides citrus trees like orange, tangerine, kumquat, lime, and grapefruit trees; banana trees, palm trees, oak trees, oleanders, dense hedges, ornamental plants, ferns, and flowers filled these middle class and upper middle class neighborhoods.

By the time that I moved to Tampa in 1996, Hillsborough County had grown to nearly one million people. At this moment in time, the character of Tampa was about to change significantly. The area north of Tampa, the orange groves and small lakes, was almost completely developed. These very traditional, beautiful, comfortable suburban neighborhoods that had been built from the 1960s through the 1990s were done.

An unbelievable and unprecedented amount of new development began in what was called “New Tampa”, to the north west, on the west side of Interstate 75. On the west side of Interstate 75, there were thousands of acres of cattle pasture and swamp land, this became “New Tampa”.

Every housing development in New Tampa was a “gated community”. You exited Interstate 75 onto Bruce B. Downs Boulevard, and drove west until you reached the entrance to the gated community in which you lived, turned in, and drove through the entrance past the guard house and gate. This entrance was the only way in, and the only way out. Each gated community was surrounded by a combination of walls, earth berms, and tall hedges.

Besides being protected behind the walls, earth berms, and gates, or you could look at it as being a prisoner, which was often the case when you tried to leave in the morning during rush hour, these gated communities featured “McMansion” architecture. “McMansion” architecture is where cheap construction methods and cheap materials are used to create intentionally tall entry ways and high roof peaks, to make a home look enormous and expensive.

I believed that I had arrived in Tampa about twenty years too late. On weekends when I was living on Lake Magdalene, I would ride my bicycle through these beautiful thirty year old neighborhoods, with quiet tree lined streets, natural lakes in the backyards, community tennis courts, and small orange groves here and there.

In these thirty year old neighborhoods, everyone knew everyone on that street, and the next streets over. Husbands and wives bought one of these houses when they were in their thirties, and stayed there even after their kids moved out, they retired, and became old.

Some of these houses were large five bedroom, three bathroom houses, but most of these houses were modest and unpretentious. Due to the economy and nature of Tampa, with large corporations, an international airport, McDill AFB, international sea port, and professional sports teams, neighbors would have been doctors, lawyers, engineers, airline pilots, military officers, ship captains, or professional athletes.

For adults in these neighborhoods, especially the wives, it would have been very enjoyable to be able to socialize with so many other adults with similar education, professional level, income level, interests, and values. Parents in these neighborhoods did not have to worry very much about where their kids were, because all of the parents watched all of these kids.

After school, and in the summer, the kids in these neighborhoods, could have gone swimming, fishing, canoeing, water skiing, sailing, or played tennis. I don’t think there would be any question that each of these kids was expecting and planning on going to college, because that is what all of the other kids did, and that is what everyone’s parents had done. There would not have been aimless, depressed, self-destructive, drug addict, hoodlum kids around.

So I would have liked to have been either a kid or an adult living in one of these middle class neighborhoods in north Tampa from 1960 to 1990. I think that I would have been happier as a kid or an adult living among peers with the same interests, values, beliefs, and goals, in this warm, safe, beautiful environment, doing things that I like to do. But after 1990, no way, Tampa became too huge and overwhelming.

I want to point out, that these middle class adults who lived in Tampa from 1960 through 1990, with their education, professionalism, values, beliefs, interests, and goals, they caused Tampa to thrive, and double in size. Though these adults created and loved their quiet, peaceful, happy, suburban neighborhoods on the north side of Tampa, the growth that they caused, changed the character of Tampa, to something that they would not have liked, the “gated communities” with the “McMansions”. However, they would have acknowledged there was no way to be able to stop this, it was inevitable.

I also want to point out, that the kids who grew up in these beautiful, safe, fun, middle class neighborhoods on the north side of Tampa, where everyone’s parents went to college, and everyone was going to go to college, that these kids were so solidly grounded, that I think that they could do O.K. living anywhere. What I mean is, I think these kids all turned out so well due to the constant positive influence of their peers and the other parents, that I think these kids as adults could cope with living in an unpleasant city or urban area. ( I base this belief on my experiences attending the University of Florida on a campus with what was then 35,000 students, where some students thrived and some students could not cope, not because of intelligence level, but because of their backgrounds.)

When I was living in Flagstaff, Arizona, which I loved, I also felt that I arrived there twenty to thirty years too late. To save time, I could say that everything about Flagstaff was wonderful. However, beginning in about year 2000, real estate prices began to skyrocket. And from what I have been told, growth has just continued non-stop to this day, making not just the price of real estate a problem, but now over development is a problem too.

The best, most enjoyable years to live in Flagstaff, were probably the 1960s through the 1990s. The town, the forests, the mountains, the beauty, the lifestyle, the people, the weather were all so enjoyable, that this is what led to real estate skyrocketing, and the over development. It was just inevitable.

Finally, getting to what this blog post was supposed to be about, “The Best Seven Years For Dickinson, North Dakota.” From 2007 through 2014, there was an Oil Boom in Dickinson, North Dakota. Though there was an “Exploration Boom” in North Dakota in the 1950s, and there was a “Gas Price Oil Boom” in North Dakota in the 1970s, this most recent oil boom has had the most significant and greatest impact on Dickinson.

How can I say that 2007 through 2014 was “The Best Seven Years For Dickinson” ? To begin, prior to 2007, the average hourly wage in Dickinson was probably about $8 per hour, with no opportunity to work overtime. There were very few job openings, and very few opportunities to get a higher paying job. There was no way for most Dickinson residents to get ahead financially. It would have been difficult for most Dickinson residents to even be able to save enough money to get out of Dickinson and try to move some place else.

In addition to there being mostly only low paying jobs, with very few opportunities to get a higher paying job, everything in Dickinson was controlled. The wealthy families in Dickinson, and the influential families in Dickinson, controlled who got hired, who got fired, who got a promotion, who got demoted, who got recognition, who got blame, who got arrested, who was not prosecuted, who got a home loan, who got a car loan, who was evicted, and so forth.

When the Oil Boom began in 2007, it was almost like the Dickinson residents were released from bondage. There was such a demand for workers in the oil field, that any able bodied person in Dickinson could get a job immediately for at least $16 per hour, which is about twice the average hourly pay of $8 per hour, plus, they might be allowed to work as much as 40 hours of overtime each week.

Some Dickinson residents, who were in their forties, who had always been kept down in Dickinson, always receiving low pay, never getting a promotion, never being able to get a better job, never being able to get a home loan, all of a sudden went from making $320 per week, to making $2,000 per week. And for once, there was no wealthy or influential family in Dickinson who could stop them.

When the Oil Boom began, a graduating high school student who would not have been able to find a job in Dickinson, could now get a job earning as much as $1,400 per week working in the oil field. A graduating high school student who would have had no car, and had to live with his parents, could now get a job working in the oil field, buy a very nice truck, and rent their own apartment.

Once the Oil Boom began in Dickinson, young couples were each able to obtain good employment, get married, and buy their own home. Older couples were each able to obtain good employment, pay off their credit card debt, pay off their car loans, and pay off their home loans.

Due to families in Dickinson owning farms, or having retained mineral rights, oil well lease signing checks and revenue checks, began earning many families in Dickinson thousands or tens of thousands of dollars each month. Farmers purchased completely new farm equipment, trucks, and travel trailers. Some families dispersed this monthly oil revenue money to their children and grandchildren. Many family members in Dickinson receiving oil revenue money purchased new vehicles, motorcycles, travel trailers, did home remodels, or paid for their kids to go to college.

Due to the amount of oil field work in and around Dickinson, many new large warehouse buildings were built, new office buildings were built, new restaurants were built, a new shopping center was built. About five new hotels and fifteen new apartment buildings were built. Local land owners, real estate agents, and construction companies made money on these new building projects. Some local residents started and grew their own oil field service companies and construction companies.

During this Oil Boom, the City of Dickinson was able to build one of the nicest recreation centers in the World. It has two indoor swimming pools, one outdoor swimming pool, skateboard park, ice skating rink, two indoor tennis courts, three indoor racketball courts, four indoor basketball courts, one volleyball court, indoor golf simulator, rock climbing wall, indoor track, cardiovascular equipment area, weight lifting gym, aerobics studios, and child day care.

The City of Dickinson was able to build a new Police Department, have a new water tower, pave many roads, widen roads, add stop lights, build a new school, and have a new County Fairground.

Would I have wanted to be in Dickinson from 2007 through 2014? Yes, I would have, especially if I would have been a resident of Dickinson. I was in Dickinson on and off from 2011 until now in 2018.

Unlike my story about getting to Tampa too late, where Tampa kept growing and growing, or my story about getting to Flagstaff too late where Flagstaff kept growing and growing, I got to Dickinson too late, because Dickinson is contracting.

In my stories about Tampa and Flagstaff, conditions in these towns were so good, that it was inevitable that they would grow. In Dickinson, conditions are so bad, that it is seems inevitable that Dickinson will decline.

One of the reasons why I am writing this particular blog post, and the way that I am writing it, is because the people in Dickinson do not know that 2007 to 2014 will likely be the best years that Dickinson has ever had, or will have. I began with the two stories about Tampa and Flagstaff, to explain the inevitability of places changing, even if you do not want them to go in the direction that they are going in.

In the case of Tampa, there was so much continued growth because of the regional economy, low cost of living, good climate, recreation, entertainment, night life, fine dining, shopping, professional football, professional baseball, professional hockey, international airport, international sea port, U.S. Central Command McDill AFB, and the University of South Florida.

In Flagstaff, the continued growth had nothing to do with the regional economy or cost of living, neither of which are very good, it was the beauty of the town, the Coconino National Forest, the snow skiing, trail hiking, rock climbing, mountain biking, the clear blue skies during the winter, the nightlife, friendly downtown, diverse and well educated population, low crime and no riff-raff hoodlums.

In Dickinson, after the Oil Boom ended in 2015, many of the oil field jobs went away, many oil field workers returned to the states where they came from, and subsequently other jobs went away in other areas of the economy. The amount of oil field jobs continue to decrease, as do other jobs in other areas of the economy in Dickinson. As there are fewer jobs in Dickinson, and a greater supply of workers than demand for workers, we are seeing the wage rates steadily decrease in Dickinson.

As there are fewer oil field jobs, fewer jobs in other areas, and wage rates are decreasing, the old practices of nepotism, favoritism, discrimination, prejudice, and exclusion in hiring, promotion, lay offs, and home lending are beginning to emerge again in Dickinson.

The people in Dickinson are unfriendly, the Police in Dickinson are encouraging people to leave Dickinson, the Police in Dickinson are discouraging people from going out at night, the restaurants are not very good, the restaurant servers are not very nice, there is shortage of women, there is scarcity of attractive women, the real estate prices are high, the real estate prices are likely to fall, there is too much crime in Dickinson, little entertainment, few recreation activities, and it is cold and grey for about seven months of the year in Dickinson.

The population of Dickinson is decreasing, Dickinson is contracting, and this is just going to continue. The people in Dickinson refuse to see this or acknowledge this. Some people believe the Oil Boom will come back.

In order for Dickinson to not contract, Dickinson would have to be a place where people would want to move, and stay. Here are some changes that would be needed:

The Police in Dickinson need to find a way to stop the crime and drug dealing in Dickinson, without following, surveilling, and stopping non-criminal, law abiding people.
The Police in Dickinson need to find a way to allow adults to go out to restaurants and sports bars at night to socialize, without following, surveilling, and stopping them on their way home.
The people in Dickinson need to stop being mean and nasty to other people in general, and to cease nepotism, favoritism, prejudice, discrimination, and exclusion in hiring, firing, promotion, and bank lending.
The people in Dickinson need to stop being out-of-their minds as far as real estate prices in Dickinson.
The banks in Dickinson need to grant home loans to people who demonstrate that they can make the mortgage payments.
The restaurants in Dickinson need to stop using jaded, rough, mean drug addict women as servers, especially the ones from Spokane, Seattle, and Coeur D’Alene.
Dickinson needs to be a city that promotes health, such as hygiene, exercise, and fitness, and discourages smoking, tobacco, illegal drugs, over use of alcohol, and over eating.
Dickinson needs to be a city that promotes education, awareness, and spirituality, and discourages ignorance, hate, and Catholicism.
Dickinson needs to be a city that encourages women to be beautiful and friendly, and discourages women from being ugly, glaring, and scowling.
Dickinson might need to have a strip bar, just so men can see what women are supposed to look like, maybe they have never seen one, or they have forgotten what they look like.
Dickinson needs to have a good Italian restaurant.

I wouldn’t go out in Dickinson, North Dakota at night, on a dare, or if you paid me. My experiences living in Dickinson for nearly six years have taught me that you do not go out at night in Dickinson.

I have had so many bad experiences going out in Dickinson at night, even just to get something to eat, go to the grocery store or WalMart, that I know not to do it. From what I see, 95% of everyone else in Dickinson feels the same way, they won’t go out at night in Dickinson.

The number one reason or cause for people not wanting to go out at night in Dickinson, is the City of Dickinson Police. The City of Dickinson Police have been so aggressive in scrutinizing, surveilling, stalking, following, tail gaiting, stopping, and questioning people at night in Dickinson, even when they are just going to the grocery store or WalMart, that people don’t even want to leave their homes at night.

If you aren’t doing anything wrong, you shouldn’t have anything to worry about? No, that’s not how it works. The City of Dickinson Police want to find something to charge you with, so they will ask you questions about what you are doing, where you are going, have you had any alcohol to drink, do you have any weapons in your vehicle, and more. You are going to have to explain yourself to their satisfaction, while they try to find something wrong with your driver’s license, registration, proof of insurance, vehicle, vehicle contents, your activities, your attitude, and other things.

The City of Dickinson Police have gotten people so conditioned to being scrutinized, followed, and stopped at night, that fewer, and fewer, and fewer people go out at night, to the point that Villard Street, the main thoroughfare through town, is just about completely vacant.

Because the streets in Dickinson are so completely vacant at night, when a vehicle does enter a street at night, the Dickinson Police automatically assume that this person must be a law-breaker and up to no good, because no one is supposed to be out at night, no one is allowed out at night.

The second most common reason why people do not go out in Dickinson at night, is why would you? If you went to the drive through of Arby’s, Wendy’s, or Taco Bell in Dickinson, the food and the service that you get, would be equal to what you would find anywhere else in the United States. And this is about as good as it gets for dining in Dickinson. For something better than fast food, you could order take-out from Upin Thai.

But going inside a fast food restaurant in Dickinson at night, or any restaurant in Dickinson at night, you are most likely going to find blue collar male workers from the oil field or construction. If you have worked in Dickinson for two years, three years, six years, all day, every day with blue collar male workers, do you want to spend any more time with them?

I will say, that at the fast food restaurants in Dickinson, there are some young girls who work there, who are nice, cute, attractive, silly, funny, and entertaining, but you can’t or shouldn’t bother them too much while they are working.

If you go to a sit down restaurant in Dickinson with waitresses, if you are a normal adult who has lived in Dickinson for a few years, you know from experience that these waitresses are from Coeur D’Alene, Seattle, or Spokane. They and their boyfriend were drug addicts who could not get a job or keep a job where they were living, so they came to Dickinson. They are shitty, callous, jaded human beings, who just want to get high on meth or heroin. Knowing this, would you want to go out to eat at restaurant in Dickinson, or would you rather stay home?

I Get Asked, “Do You Like Living In Dickinson?”

Today I was asked, “Do you like living in Dickinson?” In order to not be mean and unfriendly, I usually say, “I can make more money in Dickinson right now, than I can back in Idaho, but it has been difficult.”

Usually, I will give one or two examples of how it has been difficult. Today I said, “In the apartment building where I live in downtown Dickinson, there is a lot of noise, fighting, drug dealing, and theft. I wish that I was back a my own house, where I didn’t have to deal with neighbors like this.”

If I were to tell the truth, it would be something like this, “With the shortage of women, lack of attractive women, unfriendly women in restaurants and bars, and the Police trying to stop everyone they can, living in Dickinson has been like being in prison.”

Most of the time, when local people ask me how I like living in Dickinson, from the way that they act when they ask me, it appears that they are expecting me to say how nice it is, or how great it is. This is one of the reasons why I sometimes write that the people in Dickinson are not even aware that Dickinson is any different from anywhere else.

I have tried to come up with a way, at least in my mind, to quickly sum up how Dickinson, North Dakota is different than the area of Idaho where I had been living. The most important thing that I could say about the area of Idaho where I had been living, was that it was very “Progress” oriented.

What I mean by “Progress” oriented, is that anything that was accomplished that was good, it was appreciated, celebrated, or valued. For instance, a new house being built, a new barn being built, a road being paved, a new Doctor moving to town, a new Dentist moving to town, someone’s kid graduating from college, someone’s kid becoming an engineer, someone’s kid becoming a lawyer, all of these types of things were appreciated, celebrated, and valued.

The reason why, was because the people believed that when these things happened, everyone was making progress, things were improving, things were getting better, these were signs of success, people are prospering.

Another reason why accomplishments, especially other people’s accomplishments, were appreciated, celebrated, and valued, was the belief that surely these things will help and benefit all of us.

The area of Idaho where I had been living, was about 60% to 70% Mormon. Idaho has more Mormons in total, and more Mormons per-capita, than Utah does. The Mormons are very “Progress” and “Results” oriented. What this is like, is that Mormons want other people to do well and prosper, and together everyone can do well and prosper.

Just like in every religion or culture, there are some members that don’t do what they are supposed to be practicing, but in general, the Mormon idea that everyone can do well together, is something that you can see working when you live in a Mormon community.

If you don’t want to believe what I am writing, you can read the book by Blaine Lee titled, “The Power Principle, How To Influence With Honor.” Blaine Lee was a Mormon, and an associate of another Mormon named Stephen Covey who wrote the very famous book titled “The Seven Habits Of Highly Effective People”.

When I read Blaine Lee’s book “The Power Principle, How To Influence With Honor” when I was about 27 years old, it changed the way I thought and behaved. At first, I had a hard time believing what Blaine Lee was teaching, that one of the best and most important ways that you can be successful, was to get out of other people’s way and help other people to be successful.

I am not going to dwell on this principle right now, but this really works. Especially in the work place, you would be amazed to see how much “Progress” and “Results” can be made by getting out of co-workers or subordinates way, and helping them to be successful.

For instance, this is a really good example, when I was a construction superintendent and a construction project manager at a very young age, I would talk to the foremen to see how they wanted to handle something, and then say O.K., that’s a good idea. When I asked them what they thought, and what they wanted to do, and they came up with solutions, and I said that’s a good idea go ahead, most of the time, everybody started coming up with their own solutions to problems.

The big change that occurred, was soon, there weren’t really any problems on any of my construction projects, the work moved right along. The laborers saw a problem or difficulty approaching, and they thought of their own solution, because they were allowed to, they were encouraged to, they felt empowered, they felt like they were freed to do their work. The same thing happened for the foremen, and the superintendents. They were allowed to come up with their own solutions and implement them, so they did.

Who would have thought, that just getting out of people’s way, and helping them to be successful, would help me? My projects went so well, that I was promoted to project manager, received higher pay, received large bonuses, got a new company Jeep Cherokee to drive, and I was specifically requested by company owners for difficult projects.

To reiterate, the Mormons, the culture of Idaho where I had been living, was very “Progress” and “Results” oriented. Where achievement and accomplishments, especially other people’s accomplishments, were appreciated, valued, and celebrated, because there was the belief that these things improved life for everyone.

In contrast, in Dickinson, and western North Dakota, people act like they hate each other, people act like if someone else fails, that this helps them succeed. And, if someone else succeeds, this makes them fail.

This is why in Dickinson and western North Dakota, people do not cooperate with each other, co-workers do not cooperate with each other, co-workers undermine each other, co-workers withhold information, workers try to find something about their co-workers to fault them for or use against them.

Just recently, which I wrote about in a previous blog post, another contractor got one of their work trucks stuck on a job site. I let them borrow my personal tow strap and tow rope, helped them hook up the trucks, got them to try a different way when it didn’t work, and was ready to get the site owner to come down with their front end loader. When I realized that I was the only other person left at the site that day, I was figuring on having to use the front end loader myself. However, I was informed the following day, that if I had used the loader, I would have been fired immediately.

I am repeating this story, because in the past, I saw that work got accomplished much better when people came up with their own solutions to problems, and were allowed to solve work site problems. When you start being nasty to people who dare to come up with solutions to problems that arise on the work site, people will revert back to standing around, waiting, not doing anything, not offering information, not offering solutions that they know of, because they are scared of getting in trouble.

So, in Dickinson, this is not a culture of “Progress” or “Results”, it is a culture of trying to keep other people down, keep other people in their place, and someone else accomplishing something or succeeding, is seen as being detrimental. This is one of the reasons why people in Dickinson hate people with a college education so much, they see someone else’s accomplishments, as being detrimental to them.

Would I Buy A House In Dickinson, North Dakota At This Time?

Would I buy a house in Dickinson, North Dakota at this time? My answer is that I personally would only buy a house in Dickinson at this time, if it were less than $80,000. There are several reasons for this, and I will explain these reasons.

First reason, though the housing prices in Dickinson, North Dakota have come down some since the oil boom ended in 2015, most houses are still priced too high. I believe that in the next several years, house prices in Dickinson will drop by about 20%. It would not be a very good idea to buy an expensive, over-priced home in Dickinson at this time, because house prices are going to continue to decrease.

Second reason, this happened before in Dickinson during the second oil boom that occurred from approximately 1978 to 1983, that housing prices shot up, then fell once the oil boom ended. However, the assessed property values determined by the tax assessor remained at their peak values for years following the end of the second oil boom, in order for the City and the County to cover the amount of money they had spent on infrastructure improvements during the oil boom.

In other words, if you buy an expensive, over-priced home in Dickinson at this time, you can expect your assessed property value for property taxes to remain at its peak value for years and years to come. Who wants to pay high property taxes?

Third reason, it is possible that there could continue to be job losses in Dickinson, decreasing wage rates, and people moving away. More home vacancies, fewer jobs, and lower paying jobs, mean housing prices will continue to fall. Also, who will be able to buy a house, and how much money will they be able to afford? You would have a much better chance of being able to sell your house at the low price range, or rent out your house at the low price range, which is why you do not want to buy an expensive house in Dickinson.

The other thing that I need to say about buying an $80,000 house in Dickinson, is that the immediate area of the house would have to meet certain conditions. In Dickinson on the north side of Villard Street and the south side of Villard Street, and on the south side of the railroad tracks, there are old residential blue collar neighborhoods, where some of the older smaller wood frame houses are in the $80,000 price range.

On some city blocks in Dickinson, though the houses are older and smaller, the residents all take pride in their homes and their yards. If you were to purchase an old small inexpensive home on this city block, you might not have to worry too much about noise, theft, and illegal drug activity.

However, on some city blocks in Dickinson, the battle has already been lost. A few neglected houses have become rental houses, or subdivided rental units. You would likely have a constant turnover of low income neighbors. People who do not have good sense, or know or care about right and wrong. Loud ghetto music at all hours, yelling, fighting, illegal drug activity, traffic at all hours, and theft and vandalism to your home and your property.

Another way to say it, you would be looking in a nice neighborhood, for the absolutely least expensive house, maybe the house that doesn’t even look like it belongs with the other houses.

Because I expect readers to disagree with me, that there are no $80,000 houses for sale in Dickinson, North Dakota, here is a listing for a 2br/2ba house for $65,000:

It Seems Like Reckless Drivers Never Get Caught In Dickinson, North Dakota

On Thursday of this week, I was at a stop sign in downtown Dickinson getting ready to make a right turn onto Villard Street and drive west, when two motorcycles went by going 80 mph to 100 mph travelling east.

I came to a complete stop, as did one westbound car on Villard Street, one eastbound car on Villard Street, one truck that was just entering Villard Street from the south, and one woman walking her dog. We all couldn’t believe it, and we all stopped expecting there to be some kind of a crash.

I could see that the two motorcycles slowed down some when they got to the intersection at 10th Avenue East. There was no crash, this time.

I don’t see how people who ride motorcycles like this, live for even one week, or how they even still exist. I sincerely believe that they don’t need to exist, and that the World would be a much better place without them.

The 25 mph to 35 mph section of Villard Street through downtown Dickinson is probably the most dangerous place to drive 80 mph to 100 mph. Vehicles driving on Villard Street or entering Villard Street do not expect anyone to be driving this fast, and they couldn’t see or react to a motorcycle going this fast anyway.

It’s not a very good thing to have someone who is suicidal driving around Dickinson, but it is much worse that they could likely kill, cripple, or severely injure someone else who was just merely going to the grocery store or driving home from work to be with their family.

The Police in Dickinson would be able to do very little in the moment of watching a motorcycle go this fast past them, they would be unable to catch up to them. All they could do would be to try to identify the helmet of the rider, his jacket, the color of the motorcycle, and anything unusual about the faring, gas tank, or something else. Then, contact other Dickinson Police and Highway Patrol to see where the motorcycle goes or turns off.

In the neighborhood where I live downtown, there is a house down the street where some of these reckless drivers originate. Sometimes they take four wheelers out and drive about 50 mph on the 25 mph streets. Again, they never seem to get caught by the Dickinson Police. I don’t even know how the Dickinson Police could catch up to them in this residential area.

Tonight, at the apartment building where I live in downtown Dickinson, there was something like a small red Nissan, Mitsubishi, or Hyundai that has been lowered and has a belled-out exhaust, that went for a high speed drive around the neighborhood. It drove about 60 mph for four blocks going north, then four or five blocks west, then five blocks south, then back here. This took about three minutes, and I could hear this car the whole time.

I didn’t know that this car was coming back here, but when they got back into the apartment building parking lot and revved the car engine, I was very angry. I didn’t like listening to this car that was way too loud, and I didn’t like them driving recklessly in this neighborhood. Many of the four way intersections in this neighborhood do not have stop signs because they expect people to be driving slowly and to yield.

If I would have gone down there, because these people are already stupid assholes who I don’t even think should exist or live here, the situation would have escalated to where I was the one who would be arrested by the Police and subsequently be evicted. The Dickinson Police will never ever catch these people driving recklessly through Dickinson, but if I were to do something to them, I would be arrested, be evicted, and lose my job.

In order to not be in a situation like this, I shouldn’t live in a town with so many white trash and criminals, it is certain there will be conflicts.

The Criminality Of People In Dickinson, North Dakota

Yesterday evening, I heard some noise outside in the parking lot of the apartment building where I live in downtown Dickinson, North Dakota. I looked out the window, and there was a City of Dickinson Police car, and a Stark County Sheriff truck. It appeared that they were looking for an apartment resident in order to take them into custody.

In the one year that I have lived at this apartment building in downtown Dickinson, I would say that the Police or Sheriff have been here about fifteen times. But that number would be too low, because the Police or Sheriff are here several times each month, and I am not even home half of the time, to witness the other times that they may have been here.

One of the frustrating things about living in Dickinson, North Dakota, is that the people here don’t even know that they are any different than people living elsewhere in the United States. The criminality of people here, far exceeds any place else that I have ever lived. I will give some examples.

The very first apartment building that I ever lived at, was in Gainesville, Florida. In the three years that I lived at this apartment building, where 50% of the residents were students, the Police might have shown up a total of two times.

The second apartment building that I ever lived at, was in Tampa, Florida. In the two years that I lived at this apartment building, the Police might have shown up a total of three times.

At this apartment building where I live in Dickinson, the Police have shown up an estimated forty times this past year. And, I wish that the Police would have shown up even more times than this, to handle the drug dealers, trespassers, suspicious acting people, reckless drivers, and other problems.

I began thinking about how to describe the criminality of people in Dickinson, North Dakota versus elsewhere. Below I will give my estimate of the number of adults with a criminal record in the other areas where I have lived.

Flagstaff, Arizona……………………………..15% of adults with criminal record

Dickinson, North Dakota……………………..35% of adults with criminal record

If Dickinson, North Dakota would not have had an oil boom………..20% of adults with criminal record, just like most other places.

The high number of criminal people living in Dickinson, North Dakota is due to the oil boom. The oil boom brought criminal people to Dickinson. For some people with a criminal record, the oil boom in North Dakota would allow them to get a job without their criminal record in a different state being discovered. For other people with a criminal record, it was primarily the rumor of high pay that brought them to Dickinson.

For some people with a criminal record, they moved to North Dakota with the expectation of either getting a high paying job, and if not, they would steal from the people with high paying jobs, or sell them illegal drugs.

The oil boom also turned some local people into criminals, after they were introduced to illegal drugs, they became a user, a dealer, or a thief in order to pay for their drug addiction.

At the oil field service companies and construction companies where I have worked in Dickinson, I would estimate that 40% to 45% of my male co-workers had a criminal record. In previous blog posts, I wrote about looking up the company managers and foremen of the companies where I worked in Dickinson, and most of them had criminal records for assault, drug possession, and DUI.

At the convenience stores, fast food restaurants, restaurants, and bars in Dickinson, I would estimate that 35% of the women employees have criminal records for drug possession, bad check writing, assault, or DUI.

Dickinson, North Dakota is not like other places in the United States. I have complained and written blog posts about the Police in Dickinson following people around, trying to come up with a reason to pull them over and question them. I was complaining that the Police were treating everyone like they were suspected of being a criminal. The truth is, that about one out of three people in Dickinson is a criminal, and they act like it.

Why Dickinson, North Dakota Is So Quiet Tonight

When I got home to my apartment in downtown Dickinson, North Dakota at 6:30 p.m., on this Monday, June 18, everything was very quiet. I opened all of the windows in my apartment, turned on my computer, checked my e-mails, looked at my Worpress blog, looked at Facebook, read the Dickinson Press Newspaper online, and everything continued to be quiet in my apartment building, the parking lot, and this downtown residential area.

I fell asleep in my lazy boy recliner chair from 9:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m., and I am just now waking up. This residential area is so quiet right now, that I can hear that there is not a single car driving on the main downtown street through Dickinson, Villard Street. Either directly on four-lane Villard Street, or one block north of Villard Street, there are twelve bars and restaurants, and about eight gas station convenience stores.

I am listening and trying to time it, and I am not hearing even one vehicle per five minutes on Villard Street. I have heard one car in the past fifteen minutes. Can you imagine how quiet that is, one car in fifteen minutes on the main street through downtown, at 11:30 p.m. on a Monday night?

I know why Dickinson is this quiet, it is a combination of about four different things. I read a newspaper article about a month ago, that said the population of North Dakota decreased from 2017 to 2018, there was a net out-migration of about 500 people. The total population of North Dakota is only about 750,000 people.

Despite what the business owners, real estate agents, real estate developers, chambers of commerce, business associations, elected representatives, and spokespeople say, the economy in western North Dakota has been slowing down since 2015, and it continues to do so.

In the Spring of 2018, there were newspaper articles and advertisements, radio announcements and advertisements, television reports and advertisements, trade journal articles and advertisements, telling people about the great need for workers in western North Dakota. The truth is, that all of these reports and advertisements about the need for workers in western North Dakota, did not match the reality of the actual number of job openings posted on North Dakota Job Services, the Dickinson Press newspaper, Monster.com, Careerbuilder.com, Indeed.com, LinkedIn.com, etcetera.

Yes, there was a need every week for a few CDL licensed drivers, experienced heavy equipment mechanics, electricians, experienced hydraulic fracturing operators, and laborers, but just a few, not a huge amount. Many of these job openings did not represent company growth or an expansion in business operations, but were job vacancies created by workers who quit and left North Dakota.

The truth is, that workers who are already living here or who come here, who can prove that they have experience welding, fabricating, operating heavy equipment, operating fracturing equipment, working on a drill rig, with a CDL license, or are a certified mechanic, they can probably find a job if they are in good health and have a clean driving record. But there is not a huge demand for workers.

I know experienced oil field workers living here in western North Dakota who have had difficulty in finding a job, and the jobs that they eventually accept are lower pay, sometimes much lower, than what they used to get paid. I know people over 50 years of age who have work experience in the oil field and in construction, who have a lot of difficulty in finding a job in western North Dakota.

In the past several years, I have seen many people with some college education, business experience, technical experience, construction experience, and oil field experience, decide to leave North Dakota, because of the combination of not very high pay, poor working conditions, cold weather, and overall unpleasant environment here. The people who have remained here in Dickinson after the oil boom ended in 2015, are mostly blue-collar trades people.

As I previously stated up above, there was an attempt this Spring by business owners, real estate agents, real estate developers, chambers of commerce, and government spokespeople, to entice and lure people here to North Dakota using announcements, news stories, and advertisements. Most of the people who responded to this and came to western North Dakota, were no-skilled, low-skilled, inexperienced, poor, uneducated, illegal drug users from cities in Washington State and California.

Initially, in this Spring of 2018 in downtown Dickinson, it was noisy and chaotic. The poor white-trash and poor blacks who recently arrived from the inner-cities of Washington State and California ran around and got into everything like insects that had recently hatched. In expectation of getting a high paying oil field job, these no-skilled, low-skilled uneducated inner-city people rented apartments, and behaved like they did where they came from.

These new arrivals from the inner-cities continued to use illegal drugs, sell illegal drugs, get high, get drunk, and drive recklessly around Dickinson. Little by little, bit by bit, the Dickinson Police arrested these new arrivals for possession of drugs, possession of drug paraphernalia, reckless driving, and DUI.

Once these no-skilled, low-skilled, uneducated inner-city people with criminal records and bad driving records found that they were unable to get a job working in the oil field, they began doing what they did in the inner-cities where they came from, sell drugs, steal, commit burglaries, and robberies.

Little by little, bit by bit, these inner-city people who arrived in Dickinson, most of them have either been stopped by the Dickinson Police multiple times, or they have been arrested. They are in jail awaiting trial, have posted bail and have fled the state, have calmed down because they don’t want to get stopped by the Police anymore, or they have moved away because of the Police and they can’t get a job.

What is very funny to me, is at the apartment building where I live in downtown Dickinson tonight, it is so quiet, such a contrast to the months of April, May, and the beginning of June. There is no one driving recklessly through the residential streets, there is no vehicle in the apartment building parking lot playing ghetto music, there is no one stopping by the apartment building to buy illegal drugs, there are no drug addicts wandering through the parking lot or the hallways.

The people all throughout this downtown neighborhood tonight, they have got their jobs to go to in the morning, they were all in for the night by 7:00 p.m., they had dinner, watched television, and went to bed. The people from Washington State and California, are mostly back where they came from, or locked in their jail cell.

One Of The Reasons Why There Is So Much Crime And Drug Dealing In Dickinson, North Dakota

I had meant to write this blog post several days ago, after a reader from Seattle, Washington left a comment about her hearing on the radio that politicians in Dickinson were telling people to move to Dickinson, North Dakota.

When I read her comment, I said to myself, “I knew it! I knew it! There are idiots in Dickinson, who are announcing to the most crime infested areas like Seattle and Spokane, Washington…Come to Dickinson! Come to Dickinson!” This is why so many criminals and drug dealers from Washington state have been arriving in Dickinson this past year.

A woman was attacked in a rest room in a car dealership in what used to be a nice area. Another was attacked in a beach park that I used to go to frequently, I never was afraid there. I listened to radio from the Dickinson area and the politicians were eager to get families to settle there and build community—- alas

I checked out Dickinson to see if I could live and work there. Rent was too high.

Please read the above comments from Lily in Seattle, about the amount of crime in Seattle. Also, note that she heard on the radio that politicians in Dickinson want people to move to Dickinson, North Dakota. The problem is, this message is being heard in the highest crime, highest drug dealing, highest unemployment areas in the country.

What reminded me to write this blog post today, was that I was standing at my sliding glass door of my apartment balcony this morning, when some very trashy criminal looking people parked their beat up car in the parking lot and began walking into the apartment building. What do I mean by trashy criminal looking people, you may ask?

Professional people, trades people, and blue collar people who work, try to get where they are going with the least amount of trouble, problems, or conflict. Trashy people and criminals, act like they are looking for trouble, problems, or conflict wherever they go.

When I saw their Washington state license plate, it dawned on me who they were. The Stark County Sheriffs have been to my apartment building several times in the past ten days trying to serve these particular individuals court papers. Each of them has various charges to respond to, including threatening to shoot several people.

These people have been hiding from the Police for about ten days, and are driving a different vehicle in order to not be recognized. I wanted to call the Stark County Sheriff Department to let them know that they are here now, because I want these people out of the building where I live. But I didn’t call the Police and let them know, because I would expect these criminals from Washington state to cut my car tires and break my car windows in retaliation.

Financial Problems And Taxes Working In The Oil Field Of North Dakota

In 2016, this was about my fourth year of working in Dickinson, North Dakota. The oil boom was over in North Dakota by the end of 2015, but I continued to stay in Dickinson because I could make more money here, than I could back at my home in Idaho. I have always planned on, and looked forward to, moving back to my home in Idaho once I have made enough money.

Just like most years in North Dakota, I had very little work and very little income in January 2016, February 2016, and December 2016. Even if you plan on working in the Winter in North Dakota, so many projects get shut down due to the cold, and frozen ground, that there is a ripple effect of a slow down or shut down through other occupations.

In 2016, I was lucky to get a work project at the end of February, and later in the Spring, Summer, and Fall, I had two jobs at the same time. Though I had very little income in January, February, and December of 2016, I still made about $47,000 that year. This was much, much more money than I could have made in Idaho.

In Idaho, even though I have a B.S. in mechanical engineering, I would be very, very lucky to find a job paying even $30,000 per year. There are a few large manufacturers of agricultural equipment that might have a job advertisement for an engineer that pays a fixed salary of $45,000 per year, but you would be required to do the work of two to three people, taking work home with you every week night, and working Saturday and Sunday too, for an employer who would act like they didn’t know any better, but would actually be thinking that “they were getting their money’s worth”.

One of the reasons why engineers in places like Idaho and North Dakota, get treated like shit, get hired on a fixed yearly salary, have to do the work of two to three people, and take work home with them, is because there are so few job openings, that if you want to work as an engineer that bad, this is what you get stuck doing.

So for me, I feel a lot better getting paid for every hour that I work, especially when I end up making more money than I would have working as an engineer.

But let me get back to what I wanted to talk about, the financial problems and taxes. I had no problem with my employers withholding from my paychecks, federal income taxes, North Dakota state income taxes, medicare, and social security. In fact, I only claimed one withholding allowance on my employee tax withholding forms, when I could have claimed two withholding allowances.

Because I had two different jobs at the same time, each employer withheld tax money from my paychecks at the correct percentage for the money that I was being paid by that employer. However, because of my combined income from two jobs, and making $47,000 overall, I ended up being in a higher tax bracket, the 25% tax bracket instead of the 15% tax bracket. With just one withholding allowance, most people would have received a federal income tax refund for overpaying, but not me, I owed more money in federal income taxes.

What pushed me into owing more federal income taxes, was the “Obamacare Tax Penalty” of $850. Let me get this straight, I worked two jobs at the same time, I had one income tax withholding allowance, and now I owe additional money in federal income taxes, because I did not have health insurance, and you want me to pay for other people’s health insurance?

This keeps getting worse. I didn’t have hardly any income in December 2016, January 2017, February 2017, March 2017, and April 2017. I didn’t have the money to pay all of my taxes in April, and the CPA who has done my taxes for years, customarily files an extension for me because he is busy, so I didn’t pay on time.

When I did finally pay my income taxes before the end of my income tax filing extension deadline, I owed additional federal income taxes, $1,700 in Idaho State income taxes, and $450 Idaho State income tax penalty.

From my paychecks, the State of North Dakota was receiving all of the state income taxes that they were owed, which I believe was 2% of my gross pay on each paycheck. However, I didn’t have any withholding from my paychecks for the State of Idaho, where I claim residency, and their state income tax rate is about 7% I believe.

Why, why would I pay state income tax to both North Dakota, and to Idaho? Because I work in North Dakota, I don’t care that they withhold about 2% from the gross pay on each of my paychecks. I would rather North Dakota just take the 2%, rather than argue with the state of North Dakota about my residency, which I would probably lose this argument with them anyway.

I wrote a whole blog post titled “Losing Your Home In A Lawsuit Judgement”, where I explain that it is very important legally, to make sure that your home is counted under the law as “Your Primary Residence”, and not an investment property. Legal proof for me that my home in Idaho is my “Primary Residence”, and not an investment property, would be such things as me having an Idaho driver’s license, not renting out my home, not owning a second home elsewhere that I claim as my primary residence, having most of my vehicles registered in Idaho, and especially, claiming myself to be a resident of Idaho on my federal income tax return, which unfortunately means paying something like 7% of my income in taxes to the State of Idaho.

Here is what the amount of my income that I paid in Year 2016 taxes looks like:

Federal income tax 16% (bracket was 25%, but 16% was the effective rate)

North Dakota income tax 2%
Idaho income tax 7%

Total of my income paid in taxes 43.85%

I wrote this blog post today, because I am considering what to do. What can I do? If I sold my house back in Idaho, I would have to pay 6% to a real estate company, and then pay capital gains tax on the amount of gain over what I originally purchased this house for, at about a 25% tax rate on the gain. Or if I put all of the sale money into a house in Dickinson, I wouldn’t owe any capital gains taxes, but I would be putting this money into a depreciating property, as prices in Dickinson are still inflated.

I don’t want to sell my house in Idaho, I had planned on going home one day. What would I do with all of my personal property, furniture, trailers, equipment, and vehicles? I would be eaten alive in storage rental fees, if I didn’t have my own property. Even if I could fit all of my furniture, personal belongings, tools, equipment, and maybe one vehicle into a storage unit for $250 per month, this equals $3,000 per year, this is the exact amount of money that I am trying not to pay to the state of Idaho in the first place. Selling my home to avoid paying about $3,000 per year to the state of Idaho in income taxes and property taxes, would result in me paying $3,000 per year in rent for a storage unit.

How or why would I drag all of my property to Dickinson, and buy a home here? There is a tremendous shortage of women, the local people are very unfriendly, the town is being transformed by all of the drug people and criminals that are currently moving here, and the economy may continue to decline in Dickinson.

Lies About Dickinson, Lies About Real Estate, And Banks Betting Against Dickinson

About one week ago, I wrote a blog post about all of the crime and drug dealing at the apartment building where I live in downtown Dickinson almost causing me to move. I don’t want to live here, I would like to get out, but I don’t think that I could escape the drug problem by moving to a more expensive apartment building in Dickinson, the occupancy rates are so low at the new apartment buildings, that they will rent to anyone.

This past week, I began looking at the real estate multiple listings for properties in this area, and I found one that was very low priced in Belfield, North Dakota, which is 24 miles west of Dickinson.

This property, which I will give the details of below, was perfectly fine with me, though many people would not find it appealing. You have to keep in mind, that my first year in Dickinson back in 2011 during the oil boom, I slept in a 1978 truck bed camper, and I took showers at the company where I worked, or at the Tiger Truck stop. My second year back in Dickinson in 2013, I slept in an enclosed utility trailer that was 7 ft x 14 ft, with no water and no sewer connections. In 2011 and 2013, I was very cold when the temperature was below 0 degrees Fahrenheit outside, while trying to live in a camper with one electric heater.

The property that I saw in the Dickinson real estate multiple listing guide last week that interested me, was a 3 br, 1 ba, 1,000 square foot manufactured home on a 75 ft x 140 ft owned lot, for $25,000. According to the website Realtor.com, for a 30 year mortgage at 6% apr, the combined monthly payment for the mortgage, property tax, and insurance would be $106 per month, total.

Because I can’t park my equipment trailers and some of my vehicles at the apartment where I live now, my combined storage and rent payment is $500 per month. Which is better, $500 per month to live in an apartment building with drug dealers and crime, or $106 per month to live in your own home, on your own land?

$25,000 is pretty cheap for a 3 br, 1 ba home on its own lot, for this area, or for any area. From 2009 to 2015 during the oil boom, the rent for this manufactured home would have been $2,000 per month, which equals $24,000 per year.

I went and looked at this manufactured home, inside and out, on Friday of last week, and I took a video of it which I will show below. I liked this manufactured home, it was fine with me, the yard, the outside, and the inside. On the good side, it is fully furnished, and all of the furniture, washer and dryer come with it. On the bad side, the roofing shingles on the south side are cupped, and will have to be replaced. A new roof will cost about $5,000.

The real estate agent was pleasant and professional. He told me that the property had been purchased by a company that needed to provide a place for three workers to live, but now that this company no longer does business in North Dakota, they just want to sell this property. Other prospective buyers had offered to make a large cash down payment, and make monthly payments to the property owner, but all of these offers were declined. The company wants to receive complete payment at one time, and be done.

A little over a year ago, I received a mortgage application package to complete from Dakota Community Bank where I have an account. When I spoke to the loan officer again at Dakota Community Bank on this past Friday, she said that Dakota Community Bank will no longer lend money on any manufactured home whatsoever, no matter how new it is, or how much owned land is involved. Later I had a short discussion about a personal loan using my vehicles as collateral, but most of these vehicles are not in North Dakota, and their value would be assessed at wholesale trade-in value, which is nothing.

I talked to someone at ENG Lending in Dickinson, and their policy is that they will loan money on a new manufactured home at the dealer, but not on a used manufactured home. I spoke to a loan officer at Gate City Bank in Dickinson, and they said that they looked up this property, and would not loan money on this property because the area that it was in was zoned commercial. I suspect that Gate City Bank was just looking for a reason to excuse themselves from lending on an older manufactured home.

I was told that I would have a high likelihood of getting a loan from the bank in Belfield where the home is located, Choice Financial. I went to Choice Financial Bank on Friday last week, discussed this with loan officers, but they have not called me back. I don’t think that they can do anything with an older manufactured home either.

In a way, this whole process was funny and unbelievable to me. All throughout Dickinson, all of the business owners, real estate agents, property managers, property investors, business people, financial people, and bankers, like to talk and make announcements about how the economy in Dickinson is booming, growing, expanding, and taking off. Yet all of the bank owners have so little faith in the economy in Dickinson, that they have issued instructions that no loans are to be made on manufactured homes even if they are on owned land.

The other thing that is kind of funny and absurd to me, is that this property is not 3 times my annual income, not 2 times my annual income, but ½ of my annual income. In many parts of the U.S., people are getting home loans, where the cost of the home is 3 to 4 times the person’s annual income. Yet in Dickinson, I can’t get a loan to buy a home on owned land, that is ½ of my annual income. Or, I could probably be approved to buy a new car in Dickinson for $35,000, a car, whereas I can not get a loan for a lesser amount, for a 3 br, 1 ba home, where I would live, for less money than I have been paying for rent the past four years.

I could put the whole $25,000 purchase on my credit cards, I receive credit card checks that I can use just like a regular check with no discount to the recipient. But my interest rate would be 18%, which is about $4,500 per year in interest alone. Why would I want to pay about $375 per month, just in interest?

I discussed with the real estate agent, making a cash offer for $18,000. The real estate agent said that this proposal had already been made to the property owner, he refused, he will accept nothing less than $25,000.

The real estate agent, each of the bank loan officers, the other bank personnel, and the Stark County personnel that I spoke to in the past several days, were all pleasant, polite, and professional. I like this manufactured home, it is fine with me, I can afford it, I don’t mind paying the asking price, and I don’t mind living in Belfield. I just could not get financing.

There were many other people who also wanted to buy this manufactured home, on its own 75 ft x 140 ft lot. The loan payments on this property, would be lower than just about anything you could rent in this area, even lower than the rent on an old studio apartment. However, no one could get a loan, the owner would not accept a large down payment and finance it, nor would the owner accept cash payment for a lesser amount.

I got a lot of insight from this. No matter what the talk is on the street, in the newspapers, and on television about how well the economy in Dickinson is doing, the people with money, the people who know what is really going on, are not about to loan money on manufactured homes, even manufactured homes on owned land, for at least three reasons.

One, they expect the economy in Dickinson to decline, people to continue to lose their jobs, and they expect people to default on their home loans. Two, with the economy in Dickinson declining, and people defaulting on their home loans, who are they going to get to buy a foreclosed manufactured home, or who are they going to get to rent a foreclosed manufactured home? Three, with the economy in Dickinson declining, wealthy people and bank owners do not want to be stuck owning multiple manufactured home properties that people have defaulted on, these things will be worth pennies on the dollar there are going to be so many vacancies in Dickinson.

Think about this, on the other hand, if the bank owners and the people with money in Dickinson, truly believed that the economy in Dickinson was expanding, they would not hesitate to make loans on manufactured homes on owned land, for at least three reasons.

One, with more job openings expected in Dickinson, people would not be losing their jobs and defaulting on their home loans. Two, so what if someone defaulted on their home loan while the economy was growing, it would be easy to find someone else to buy or rent a foreclosed manufactured home. Three, so what if someone defaulted on their manufactured home loan when the economy was expanding, the value of manufactured homes on owned property would be going up and up, who wouldn’t want to own assets that are appreciating in value?

At this point, I don’t care, I am done trying to work this purchase out. I will just sit back and watch this manufactured home not sell, and continue to decline in value. I don’t care if someone else finds a way to purchase this home, to live in, or to own this home as an investment and rent it out. I have nothing against this home, I like it, but it will need a new roof soon. Do Not Get Over Excited About Moving To North Dakota In 2018

In the past several years, I have written many blog posts where I try to get the information out there, that there are false rumors and misinformation being spread about the need for workers in North Dakota, in order to lure people here.

Business people in North Dakota habitually try to talk up the economy, making broad exaggerations, making things up, and sometimes lying. Business people, politicians, news media, and ordinary citizens, repeat back to each other, what they have heard, but very few people hardly ever take the time to see if what they are saying is true.

It is so frustrating to me, the reality of what is going on in Dickinson, North Dakota, versus what people in Dickinson are saying and talking about.

Since the oil boom ended in North Dakota in 2015, I have seen a net decrease in the amount of businesses in Dickinson, a net decrease in the number of residents, an increase in homes for sale, an increase in apartments for rent, an increase in trailer park vacancies, an increase in vacancies in commercial and retail buildings, real estate prices have gone down, people have been unable to sell their homes, rent prices have gone down, and there are fewer job advertisements.

Just a few highlights are, Delta airlines ceased operations at the Dickinson airport due to lack of customers and lack of profitability, and United airlines tried to cease operations at the Dickinson airport due to lack of customers and lack of profitability. The government prevented United airlines from leaving the Dickinson airport due to an “essential air services” rule.

Sears has closed, JC Penny has closed, Herbergers department store is closing soon, and the Prairie Hills mall has recently been sold. The two largest stores in the Prairie Hills mall were JC Penny and Herbergers. For the stores like Sears, JC Penny, Herbergers, Hobby Artz, and Radio Shack that have closed, there have not been any new or different stores to open to replace these stores.

A few other businesses that have closed in Dickinson were Total Workforce Solutions staffing company, Evolution Gym, Pita Pit restaurant, Wildcat Pizza, several small business in the downtown business district, and more than several local construction and contracting companies. The Elks Lodge was forced to downsize, they sold the upstairs to their own building, and moved into the basement of their building.

Even though the population of Dickinson has decreased, many businesses have closed and not been replaced by new or different businesses, many local companies have closed and not been replaced by new or different companies, there are many vacancies in residential and commercial properties, and there are fewer job advertisement listings, the people in Dickinson walk around talking about how things are taking off.

I looked at the North Dakota Job Services job listings for Dickinson today. I counted about thirty-two job listings posted in the month of April so far up until today, April 23. Of these thirty-two job listings for Dickinson, twelve of these job listings were for certified medical professionals like nurses, mammography technicians, and radiology technicians. This leaves twenty non-medical job listings for the month of April in Dickinson. Eight of these remaining jobs were low paying retail type jobs.

I then went and looked at the job listings for Dickinson, North Dakota on the website Indeed.com. On Indeed.com, there were roughly twice as many job listings, as what North Dakota Job Services had. There were roughly fifty to sixty job listings posted in the month of April so far, on Indeed.com. Approximately ten of these jobs were low paying such as customer service, retail, and food service workers. Approximately ten of these jobs were part time or seasonal. Approximately ten of these jobs were sales type jobs where an applicant is led to believe that there is potential to earn good pay, but it never works out that way. (You might not know what I mean about bullshit sales jobs unless you or your friends have done these jobs, where you never receive sales commissions.)

On Indeed.com, there were about fifteen jobs posted for Dickinson, North Dakota, in the month of April, that were good paying oil field, trades person, or professional type jobs. However, these fifteen good paying jobs, required specialized experience, knowledge, or education, such as a commercial driver’s license, degree as an engineer or engineering technician, or being an experienced heavy equipment operator.

My point in writing this blog post, is not just to explain why I am annoyed that people in Dickinson persist in repeating information that is not true about things in Dickinson taking off, I want to explain that this luring people here by telling them that there is a huge need for workers, is going to cause problems and hardship for people.

As I explained about the job listings posted for the month of April on Indeed.com, there were about fifteen jobs that were good paying jobs, but they required specialized experience, knowledge, or education. What are people in Dickinson trying to do, what are people in North Dakota trying to do, telling the world that there is a great need for workers, and high paying jobs, when this is not the case?

People are going to move to North Dakota, possibly bringing their families with them, because they heard about all of the jobs, and the high paying jobs. When they get here, and can’t get a job, or can only get a low paying job, what is going to happen, what are they going to do, what are they supposed to do? You don’t really care, or give a shit, do you? You just like talking every day about how things are really booming in Dickinson.

Alleged Armed Robbery In Dickinson Committed By The Gorilla Gang

On Saturday April 14, 2018, an armed robbery was allegedly committed in Dickinson, North Dakota at an apartment on the 400 block of East 2nd Street. Four suspects entered an apartment with firearms, and they took cash and marijuana from three occupants.

You can read more about this alleged armed robbery in the Dickinson Press newspaper online, or you can watch North Dakota television news reports online. Three of the suspects were ages 18 to 19, so the Dickinson Police Department released their names and Police arrest photographs. This is the photo that I used for this blog post headline.

I have been writing blog posts about criminal people moving to Dickinson from bad neighborhoods in large cities like Los Angeles, Seattle, and Spokane. I am against news services, energy industry representatives, and North Dakota Job Services representatives making announcements that “North Dakota needs many, many workers for high paying jobs here in North Dakota”, because they are creating a problem.

Poor, unemployed people, who have very little or no job skills, very little or no work experience, who have been making money in the poor inner cities by stealing and dealing drugs, hear that North Dakota needs workers for high paying jobs, so they come to Dickinson.

They did not know, that companies in Dickinson might be able to hire someone with a commercial driver’s license, an experienced welder, electrician, plumber, heavy equipment operator, certified mechanic, or experienced oil field worker, but not someone with no job experience from the inner city. With no job experience, they would be even less likely to get hired if they had a criminal record, or did not graduate from high school.

The people who arrive in Dickinson from poor inner cities with very little or no job skills, very little or no work experience, possibly a criminal record, possibly without a high school diploma, with the expectation of getting a high paying job like they heard about or saw on TV, they came a long way to get here, and they can’t just turn around and go home when they can’t get a job. They see that some people have money and are making money from the expensive trucks that they drive, their snow mobiles, their four wheelers, and the RVs parked in their yards.

They can’t get a job, have difficulty getting a job, or see that they can only get a low paying job in fast food or retail. They need money, and the way that they know how to get money or get what they want, is to deal drugs, steal, and commit crimes.

The three adults whose names the Dickinson Police Department released, I began doing a Google search to try to find out where these alleged armed robbers came from. I didn’t get very far, before I found a YouTube video, and a YouTube channel, called the Gorilla Gang, where these three individuals had uploaded videos that they had made. I want to give everyone in the United States current and correct information on what employment and living in Dickinson, North Dakota is like, so that people do not experience hardship or make a mistake in coming here.

In April, some news services, energy industry representatives, and North Dakota Job Service representatives made announcements stating that there is a great need for workers in North Dakota. From what I see, this is not true, and I want to explain how things really are.

For unskilled, low skilled, and non able-bodied workers, there are a few job openings that come up in fast food, convenience store, and retail stores. These jobs are not very high paying jobs.

You might be asking or saying, why can’t I work in the oil field, or I plan on working in the oil field. I will explain about the oil field in a minute.

For unskilled or low skilled workers that are able-bodied, there are a few job openings for construction laborers beginning in the Spring, and these jobs usually last through the Fall. Once it becomes Winter in North Dakota, many construction companies shut down and lay off workers. The way that the unemployment compensation eligibility formulas are designed in North Dakota, if you do not work in the Winter months, and have high income in the Summer months, you very likely will be determined to not be eligible to receive unemployment compensation during a Winter lay off.

Working In The Oil Field

I am going to try to explain some misconceptions about working in the oil field, which everyone in the United States should know about. This is going to be pretty thorough and detailed, because I want to explain once and for all, not just how things really are in the oil field, but why things are this way, so that people quit falling for lies and bullshit that are not true.

Working For An Oil Company. In North Dakota, some of the oil companies that do business here are Continental, Marathon, Whiting, Hess, and Tesoro. One of the most common jobs for these oil companies is called “pumper”. A pumper will be assigned a company pick up truck, and about twenty oil field locations, more or less.

The pumper’s job each day, is to drive to each oil field location, observe the condition of the site, look for any leaks in pumps, piping, or tanks, inspect the pump, inspect the tanks, and record information such as pressures, flow rates, and tank levels.

What the oil companies are looking for in a pumper, is someone who is completely reliable, and completely trustworthy. They must very rarely ever call in sick, and almost never be late. They must have an almost completely perfect driving record, with no accidents and no DUIs. They must have an employment history that shows steady, long term employment with other companies, as evidence of reliability and trustworthiness.

Other qualifications that a pumper must have, is a demonstrateable knowledge of mechanics, controls, instrumentation, and equipment. Acceptable proof of aptitude would be employment history working as a heavy equipment mechanic, working in automation or controls, or previous work history in the oil field installing and maintaining pump jacks, working on a drill rig, a work over rig, or fracturing.

Most of the oil company pumpers are in their 30s, 40s, and 50s, and worked for more than five years in the oil field before they ever became a pumper.

Working for Oil Refineries, Oil Pipelines, and Gas Pipelines. In North Dakota, some of the companies that own and operate oil refineries and pipelines are Tesoro, Plains All American, and Dakota Access Pipeline. Just like the oil companies, the refinery and pipeline owners and operators are looking for people that are absolutely reliable and absolutely trustworthy.

What I did not explain about the oil companies, which also applies to the refineries and pipeline owners, is that they just will not and can not hire personnel who are unqualified or questionable in any way. There are too many people’s lives at stake, too much money at risk, too much environmental damage possible, and too much liability to hire or allow anyone to work who is questionable in any way.

They must exclude from employment, people with DUIs, people with criminal charges, people with drug charges, people with domestic abuse charges, people with mental illness, people with poor work histories, or people with vehicle accidents. Though they will not come out and say it, they try to screen out people who have extreme views whether social, religious, or political, people with bad tempers, people with depression or bi-polar, people who are too young or too old.

I wanted to describe in detail who the oil companies, refineries, and pipeline owners hire, so that people would not mistakenly believe that they could just move to North Dakota and get a job with an oil company, without understanding how selective and strict these companies are in hiring.

Working for Drilling, Work Over, and Casing Companies. In North Dakota, some of the companies that operate oil drilling rigs, workover rigs, and perform casing installation are Nabors, Patterson, H&P, Key, Big Sky, and Wyoming Casing. Unlike the oil companies, refineries, and pipeline owner companies, who are concerned primarily with employees being completely reliable and completely trustworthy, the drilling, work over, and casing companies are primarily concerned with hiring people that can physically handle the work.

The drilling, work over, and casing companies perform the most dangerous and most physically demanding work. There are very few people who are physically capable of doing these jobs, and very few people who would be willing to do these jobs because they are so difficult and dangerous.

On an oil drilling rig, the floor hands on the drilling platform typically have to work a twelve hour shift each day, for fourteen days in a row, then they receive seven days off. During each twelve hour shift on the drill rig platform, the floor hands may be required to continuously stand at the drill pipe and make connections, they may be required to continually climb up and down fifty stair steps carrying heavy tools and equipment that weigh 100 lbs or more, they may be required to climb the twelve story tall drill derek. The weather could be 90 degrees Fahrenheit, or it could be -40 degrees Fahrenheit with wind chill.

On a drill rig, there is no faking work, pretending to work, slacking off, getting out of work, or getting someone else to do your work for you. It is nothing but work, all the time, the drilling has to proceed non-stop. If you have any kind of physical defect or weakness such as a bad foot, bad ankle, bad knee, bad hip, bad back, bad shoulder, or are weak, out of shape, or get tired, you will be worked to failure to where you can not physically continue and that is the end of your job.

The drilling, work over, and casing companies do not want to waste time hiring anyone that they can already tell are not going to be physically able to do the work. They do not want to waste time and money in hiring and training the wrong people, who will not be able to last one day or one week on the job. What these companies are looking for, and who they screen out, they are not going to come out and say it because they don’t want any legal trouble, but I will explain it.

These companies are looking for men who are between the ages of twenty to thirty years old, who have a background in farming, construction, or military field duty, who are accustomed to harsh outdoor conditions, dangerous work conditions, and hard physical work. Any person who appears to be physically week, lethargic, lacking energy, lacking stamina, severely overweight, underweight, too physically small, too old, or appears to be a female, these companies don’t even want to waste their time considering these people for employment, because they have found again, and again, and again that any person who has physical weakness is just not going to be able to do the work.

The work over rig companies sometimes have employees work 14 to 16 hours per day. The casing companies sometimes have employees work up to 30 hours continuously, or until the job is completed.

Working for Directional Drilling, Hydraulic Fracturing, and Wireline Companies. Some of the directional drilling, hydraulic fracturing, and wireline companies that operate in North Dakota are Halliburton, BJ Services, and Keane. These companies seek to hire people who are reliable and trustworthy like the oil companies do, but are just slightly less strict, and they seek to hire people who are physically capable of doing hard work like the drilling companies, but they are slightly less demanding.

Directional drilling, hydraulic fracturing, and wireline companies are looking for employees who have almost perfect driving records, with no accidents, and no DUIs. They want employees who have a commercial driver’s license. These companies may be unwilling or unable to hire people with criminal records, especially with theft or assault charges.

They are looking for employees with a work history showing reliability, and having performed work in farming, construction, heavy equipment, military trades classification, or military field duty. They want people who are accustomed to working in harsh outdoor conditions, dangerous work conditions, working around heavy equipment, performing hard labor, and working long hours.

These companies will not come out and tell you who they screen out, because they do not want any legal problems, but these companies do not want to waste time and money hiring and training people who are not going to be able to physically do the work, who will only last one day or one week on the job. Typically, who they might screen out would be people who appear to be physically weak, lethargic, lacking energy, lack stamina, severely overweight, under weight, too old, erratic, unbalanced, or have bad judgement. They will hire women who meet their hiring requirements.

Working for Oil Field Service Companies. Some of the oil field service companies who operate in North Dakota are GE Lufkin, Weatherford, Stallion, Titan, Steier, SM Fencing, Bob’s. These companies have more flexibility in hiring. They are still looking for people with very clean driving records, no accidents, no DUIs, and a commercial driver’s license, but they are sometime willing to overlook a fault in one area, by an applicant having a recognized specialty in another area, such as being a certified mechanic, certified welder, certified welding inspector, certified crane operator, or journeyman electrician.

Oil field service companies are sometimes willing to hire one inexperienced younger worker at a time, if this worker appears to have good judgement, good common sense, a positive attitude, willingness to listen and follow instructions, if this worker can be placed with an older experienced worker.

Oil field service companies are sometime willing to hire older experienced oil field workers who have made a mistake, had an accident, had an injury, suffered an illness, or have a physical disability which can be accommodated.

Even though oil field service companies have more flexibility in hiring, they are still looking for people who have a background in farming, construction, or military field duty. People who are accustomed to working in harsh outdoor conditions, dangerous conditions, performing physical labor, working around equipment, operating equipment, and working long hours.

Oil field service companies are the easiest entry point into gaining work experience in the oil industry, but even so, news organizations and the oil industry have misled people across the United States into believing that entry into a high paying oil field job is as easy as working at McDonalds one day, then working for an oil company the next day.

If this were true, all of the experienced oil field service company workers who are paid at the mid-level, would go get a “high paying” oil company job tomorrow. Why would experienced oil field service company workers continue to work at mid-level pay for years and years, if it was so easy for anyone to get a high paying job for an oil company?

Working for Construction Companies in Dickinson. Some of the construction companies in Dickinson are Winn Construction, Baranko Brothers, Northern Improvement, and Tooz Construction. These construction companies would like to hire people with clean driving records and commercial driver’s licenses, but they will hire experienced construction workers who do not have a driver’s license. The experience that they are looking for is experience in operating heavy equipment such as loaders, dozer, excavator, skid steer, boom truck, lull, or experience in concrete form work, concrete finishing, steel building erection, and paving.

If you do not have prior work experience in construction, doing some of the work that I have described above, do not be mis-led by news services or North Dakota Job Service into believing that you can come to Dickinson and easily get a job in construction. The construction companies can sometimes hire people with not very much job experience to work as laborers, but it is impractical and undesirable for construction companies to hire more than just a few inexperienced workers at one time.

Summary for Working in Dickinson, North Dakota. I want for everyone in the United States to know and understand that oil companies are very strict and demanding with their background and experience requirements in hiring, drilling companies are very strict and demanding with their physical strength and endurance requirements in hiring, and oil field service companies try to hire people with relevant work experience.

There are some job openings with construction companies for low skilled laborers, but these jobs usually only last from April through October, seven months, and that you will likely not be eligible to receive unemployment compensation during a Winter lay-off.

There are some job openings in fast food, convenience stores, and retail stores, but these jobs are not high paying.

When news services, energy industry representatives, and North Dakota Job Service representatives make announcement that many workers are needed in North Dakota, I am skeptical and I don’t believe this. Many people that I know who are intelligent and skilled, have had to leave North Dakota in the past several years because they have not been able to find employment. Also, I know people who are currently living in Dickinson, who are unable to find employment.

I believe that business people in North Dakota are trying to lure people to North Dakota using false information, so that they can grow the economy, fill in vacancies in housing, and drop the wage rate that employers have to pay by creating a surplus of workers.
